Mac & Cheese

Meyer successfully ate macaroni and cheese with a spoon and then a fork last night. Of course, he eventually discarded the utensils and went at his meal with his hands. When he finished, his skin was a pale shade of orange. Still, my baby figured out silverware!

Phone Practice

Meyer has been honing his skills on the telephone by practicing with the computer mouse and the television remote. He can now hold the phone and speak into it, despite his limited vocabulary. (Really, Meyer has learned how to talk on the phone before figuring out how to talk.) As much as I enjoy Meyer now talking to me on the phone when I am at work, I think I prefer being on the other end, watching as he talks to someone else. A one-year-old with good phone-holding technique is really something to behold.

Figuring Things Out

The long, skinny, quiet cat who spends most of the day in mommy and daddy's closet is Reggie.

The things that mommy and daddy tie to my feet are called shoes.

Mommy and daddy are both momma.

Socially Awkward Already?

Yesterday afternoon daddy and I went to the kids play place at Bellevue Center Mall. There were a dozen-or-so kids there playing; a couple were younger than I was, but most were older. Even though I'm only 14-months old, have a healthy body image, and generally get along with people, I really struggled to introduce myself to the other kids so that we could play together. At times I even felt awkward, uncomfortable.

I think the main reason that I have trouble getting to know kids my age is that I don't know what to say to them. Actually, I know what I want to say, I just don't know how to say it. You see, I have a very limited vocabulary ("mama," "dada," "kitty," "hey," "diggle," "no," "dee," and a handful of other words), and of the words I do know, I'm not sure what they all mean. (I get the impression that some of my words are not actually words at all.)

So, I've learned that developing relationships depends largely on communication skills. Now that I can walk and climb and everything, I guess I need to really focus on learning to talk.

My First Marathon (and They Wouldn't Let Me Run)

I spent all morning yesterday watching the Country Music Marathon. Aunt Whitney was running. Daddy drove me, grandma, and grandpa all over the city. We'd park somewhere, get out of the car, and after 15 minutes or so, Aunt Whitney would go by. While I was waiting I ate a lot of grapes. Once, I decided to pass the time by sitting in a puddle. (Luckily, daddy had some extra pants for me.) I confess that I fell asleep before the end of the race, but 26.2 miles is a long way.

People from all over the world were running, but I didn't see anyone my age. I tried to get in the race at one point, but daddy wouldn't let me. (Something about not paying my registration fee.)
