What's 24 + 24?

Well, 25 + 25 = 50. I know that because a quarter is worth 25 cents, and two quarters are worth 50 cents.

24 is one less than 25. So, if I add two 24s together, the answer should be two less than what I get when I add two 25s together. (25 - 1) + (25 - 1) = 25 + 25 - 1 - 1 = 25 + 25 - 2

Since 25 + 25 = 50, 24 + 24 = 50 - 2, which is 48.

So 24 + 24 = 48.

I turn five today. This is how we'll be celebrating my birthday tonight:

First, we'll be dropping off Resha Kate and Malachi and picking up my cousin Morgan. (I was hoping that Malachi would be able to come too, but Mommy and Daddy said that, if I invited Malachi, I would also have to invite Resha Kate. I love Resha Kate and everything, but she really isn't mature enough for the dining experience that I'm planning.)

Mommy, Daddy, Morgan, and I will then go out to a fancy restaurant: Ruby Tuesday's. (My choice.) We'll all be dressed up. (You have to dress up when you go to a classy place like Ruby Tuesday's.) I'll be in a shirt and tie. Daddy will be wearing his orange, long-sleeved, button-up shirt with a black sweater. (My choice.) Mommy and Morgan will be wearing the dresses that I helped them pick out. Should be a good time.

If You Want to Play on the PlayPlace, You'll Have to Buy Something (Besides Coffee)

Yesterday mommy took us to McDonald's to play at the PlayPlace. I assumed that we also would be eating at McDonald's, because enjoying the PlayPlace without also paying for food is not OK. Mommy had different plans. She intended to buy only a cup of coffee. Purchasing a cup of coffee technically qualifies one as a customer. But allowing one's children to spend an hour on the PlayPlace after buying a single one-dollar menu item is ethically questionable. (A cup of coffee certainly gives one the right to use the McDonald's restroom; I'm not sure it gives one the right to invite one's family to spend an afternoon at the restaurant's indoor playground.) Making matters worse, both Resha Kate and I were willing and eager to eat at McDonald's.

Fortunately, I had anticipated such a situation and had some cash on hand. (It was Valentine's Day money.) So I took matters into my own hands. I stepped up to the counter, ordered a hamburger and an orange juice, and payed for it. So that Resha Kate would not feel left out, I went ahead and bought a hamburger for her too. We shared my orange juice. (Valentine's Day money only goes so far.) Having purchased a total of two burgers and two beverages, the Tinleys could at last put aside ethical reservations and enjoy the PlayPlace.

I've had a giant tub of Lego® Quattro blocks for four years, and I've only recently noticed the pictures on the tub that show what you're supposed to make with the blocks. Left to my own devices, I'd used the blocks to build stairs, garages, churches, and a house for the zookeeper in my animal set. But the tub suggests that I should be building Lego® men and airplanes. So I went ahead and followed the instructions and made the Lego® man and the airplane. There you go:

Curtis (pictured below) isn't supposed to go outside. But he does. All the time. Mommy and daddy don't even try to stop him anymore. But I've come up with a way to keep Curtis from ever running away again. Everytime Curtis goes to the front door, he'll see a sign that clearly says, "Don't. Run. Away. Again. Curtis." I personally dragged Curtis to the front door so that I could show him the sign and tell him exactly what is says. He has no excuse now.

I got to see the Star Wars movie with daddy yesterday at the movie theater. Resha Kate didn't get to go. She's not old enough.

The movie was pretty good, but it was way too long. It was almost as long as Wall-E—Wall-E was really way too long. They shouldn't make movies so long. And movie theaters shouldn't be so dark. And I refuse to sit in one seat for an entire movie.

Anyway, my favorite part of the movie was Ziro the Hutt. He talked funny. Jabba the Hutt talked funny too. The baby Jabba the Hutt didn't talk.

I thought Chewbacca would be in the movie, but he wasn't. I don't know why.

Last Christmas, Grandma gave me a box of art supplies that included, among other things, drawing paper, markers, and a roll of Scotch tape. Apparently, Grandma had noticed something that had been bothering me for some time: Even though two of the four people who live in our house are under four feet tall, all of the artwork on the walls hung at an adult's eye level. Additionally, little of the artwork features subject matter that appeals to anyone under the age of 25. I understood Grandma's gift as a mandate to right this injustice, to cover the walls in art for people of all heights and age levels. And that's exactly what I've done.

Regarding Verbs With Irregular Past-Tense Forms

I once assumed that I could form the past tense of any verb simply by adding ed. I now understand the complexity of the English language; for every rule there are exceptions. And while most verbs in the past tense end with ed, many do not.

Figuring out which verbs are regular and which are irregular will take time. I get the impression that something is funny about "do" and "have." At any rate, I know for certain that the past tense of "sleep" is "slope." For example: "I slope with my socks on last night."

Unerals Are Everywhere

I've used unerals at the grocery store, church, the Green Restaurant, and the mall by grandma and grandpa's house. My school has special unerals that go all the way to the floor. Daddy's work has unerals that flush all by themselves. (You can tell that a uneral will flush by itself because it will have a little red light.)

Unerals are scary sometimes, but that's OK because they usually aren't loud like normal potties when they flush. Overall, unerals seem like a really good idea. I'm not sure why we don't have one at our house.

Potty training cannot be completed overnight. In fact, it cannot even be accomplished through a weeklong camp or series of workshops. Potty training takes several months and involves many steps, each one itself very challenging. I began my potty training back when I was only two years old. Now, after many trials and triumphs, I have completed the final leg of my journey. Last Saturday, July 14, 2007, I pooped in the potty. Then on Sunday I pooped again. And I just kept pooping. To date, I have pooped on the potty every day for ten days. Sitting on the potty has become a habit—part of who I am.

Vegetarians Don't Know Where to Get a Good Sausage Biscuit

Mommy and Daddy are vegetarians. That means they don't eat meat. Most of the time, Mommy and Daddy's dietary preferences don't bother me. Actually, I usually just eat what they eat—for the most part, the vegetarian stuff doesn't bother me. But sometimes I just need a hot dog or sausage biscuit, and Mommy and Daddy don't know where to get the good stuff.

Yesterday, on the way home from church, I asked Mommy to stop and get me a biscuit, with some sausage in it (a "sausage biscuit," if you will) from McDonald's. Mommy protested, telling me that she couldn't get me a sausage biscuit because it was noon, and McDonald's stops serving breakfast at 10:30. (Sorry, I don't know how to tell time yet.) But Mommy neglected to consider two things: 1) McDonald's isn't the only restaurant that serves sausage biscuits; and 2) not every restaurant stops serving breakfast late in the morning. So I promptly informed Mommy that Jack in the Box has sausage biscuits and serves breakfast all day. Thanks to my knowledge of fast-food breakfast items, I got my sausage biscuit.

Daddy's vacuum cleaner is broken, and daddy says that no one can fix it. We're going to need a new vacuum.

Daddy seems OK, but I know that he's hurting deep inside. I don't remember daddy ever owning another vacuum. When I was little, that vacuum gave me nightmares. Even being in the same room with it made me cry. But I grew to love daddy's vacuum, and vacuuming with daddy became part of my weekend routine. I suppose that, when we get a new vacuum, daddy and I will continue this Saturday morning tradition. I just hope it's not weird.

You were a good vacuum, daddy's vacuum, and you'll be missed.

I could spend hours playing Elmo's Potty Time. Elmo, Zoey, and Baby Bear demonstrate the importance of going to the potty when you feel like you have to go to the potty. If you don't, you'll have an accident. (Elmo's Potty Time also offers a rare look at Elmo's dad.)

As much as I enjoy Elmo's Potty Time, I'm not sure that it realistically portrays small children learning to use the potty. Elmo, Zoey, and Baby Bear never have accidents—I find that very hard to believe.

Four Pretend Naomis

I've been laying down some tracks with my ~~daddy~~ producer. Some of my tunes should be available on the Internet by the end of the month. I'd prefer releasing a disc with national distribution, but ~~daddy~~ management says I should generate a buzz on the Internet before selling product.

Big-Boy Panties

Do you like them?

I know I look good in big-boy panties, but I'm really not sure why I have to wear them. With a diaper or a pull-up, I have options. I can pee-pee in the potty or in my pants, as convenience, mood, and proximity to my bathroom dictate. Big-boy panties don't give me that degree of freedom. Either I use the potty, or I walk around in wet pants.

I think I'll stick with the diaper and save the big-boy panties for special occasions.

The Airport

Last week, me and Mommy and Daddy and Baby Kate went to the airport. The airport not only had regular escalators, but also had flat escalators. (I should point out that some of the flat escalators were broken.) At the airport we went into airplanes, mommy strapped me into my car seat, and we went up into the sky. Then they brought me juice.

After the airport, we went to a hotel where we rode the pink elevator and went swimming in the blue water. Daddy took me under the blue water and mommy took me on the orange water slide. (Mommy and I got in trouble for going down the slide together.)

A few days later, we went back to the airport. This time, in addition to the regular escalators and flat escalators, there was an elevator. After about ten hours of riding elevators and escalators and going up into the sky, we went home. All in all, it was a good trip.

The Magic of Ed

I've discovered that when the two-letter combination ed is added to the end of a verb, you get a new verb that describes something that already happened. For instance, today I falled in the backyard and tumbled down a hill. Mommy comed to see if I was OK and taked me inside to clean me up.

You see, without ed I couldn't have telled that story.

Dinner With the Meerkat

Tonight I ate dinner with my meerkat. We had eggs, turkey, chicken, a slice of bread, a hot dog bun, a stick of butter, a measuring cup, and a cookie cutter. I prepared the meal myself.
